Seize opportunities and take risks If you dont ask, you dont get

Seize opportunities and take risks If you dont ask, you dont getSeize opportunities and take risks If you dont ask, you dont getWomen are bedrngnis raised to be brave. We are taught to play it safe, avoid risk and failure, and strive for perfection. From childhood, were told to be good little girls, to behave like a lady, to defer to the boys, to secure approval by pleasing the grownups, and to not be bossy, outspoken, pushy, self-aggrandizing, or disruptive.Men are taught to take risk after risk, play hard, and if they fail, to dust themselves off and plunge ahead. Behaviors such as fighting, yelling, shoving, interrupting, or competing fiercely are permitted and even approved of.This kind of gender stereotyping is nowhere mora pervasive than in the business world.Professional achievement and all the traits associated with it get placed in the male column. If a man focuses on his career and taking a calculated approach to amassing power, he is living up to societys stereotypical e xpectations of men. If a woman behaves in the exact same manner, she has violated stereotypical expectations of women. This bias is at the core of why women are held back by men and why women hold themselves back.it is a massive understatement to say that women and men are not having the same experiences at work. Women are underrepresented at every level in the corporate pipeline. They are less likely than men to be hired, paid the same wage, or promoted. In one study, when presented with identical resumes - with one submitted by John and the other by Jennifer - science professors regarded the male applicant as a more competent, significantly better hire than the female applicant, offered John a salary more than $4,000 higher, and were ready to provide greater career mentoring to John than to Jennifer. The problem is clear Women will never advance in business until we break through these stereotypes. Women need to learn to take risks, withstand disapproval and criticism, survive fa ilure, seize opportunities, and understand that perfection is never required. And we must do all of this under the disapproving glare of the men. This is a tough assignment but we must stop limiting urselves and move forward bravely. Here are some actions women can take to reverse this trend and advance their careersBe brave and take risks. Remake yourself to exude confidence.Reach for opportunities. Opportunities are rarely handed to you on a plate- you have to reach out and seize them. Take risks and advocate for yourself. Take the hard job even if its a stretch for you. If you dont, some guy will, even if its just as hard a stretch for him. Put yourself forward. When you get your hands on a project, dive into it, take charge, and offer your opinion as freely as any man would.Learn how to recover from mistakes. Shake off mistakes and move on. Men do. They also have far better mechanisms for blaming external factors (e.g., The deadline welches ridiculous) or finding a reassuring per sonal excuse (I got hit with another assignment just as I was about to turn to this.) Women obsess about perfection and agonize over mistakes. If a woman makes a presentation to twenty people, and nineteen of them tell her it was terrific, but one tells her he thought it was mediocre, shell dwell on that one persons comment. Perfection is unachievable. Learn from your mistakes and move on.Remember your body language matters. Make your physical presence known. Use the strategies that men already use lean forward at the table, point to the person youve chosen to acknowledge for a comment. Stand up and walk to the front of the room, put the flats of your hands on the table to make a point and you look someone squarely in the eye- whatever it takes. These high-power poses make you appear more authoritative and confident Men tend to interrupt women more often when we lean away, smile, or dont look at the person we are speaking to.Stop nodding and agreeing. When a woman nods, she simply m eans, Go on, Im listening. But a man will interpret a nod as agreement with whatever point hes making. Similarly, when a man mentions something he knows, its a bid to establish his status. In response, a woman will acknowledge the mans point, thinking that she will, in turn, be expected to share, and that a connection will be made. Not so. The man takes her agreement as submission to his higher status. Take note of your congenial nature - womens habits of politeness and social facilitation are misconstrued as supporting male dominance. Instead of nodding your head, be ready to challenge and question. If you dont ask, you dont get. This is critical. How will you ever reach your goals if you quietly perform only those assignments you are handed? Ask for what you want.Outmoded gender roles have kept women from achieving their full potential for years. Now we must proactively seize every opportunity to demonstrate our value in society and change the way women are treated.Linda Jane Smit hs new book, Smashing Glass Kicking Ass Lessons from the Meanest Woman Alive, is available at Amazon as well as other online booksellers. 4 Reasons You Should Customize Your LinkedIn URL

4 Reasons You Should Customize Your LinkedIn URL4 Reasons You Should Customize Your LinkedIn URLEveryone who creates a LinkedIn profile is automatically assigned a URL. And it does not look attractive at all. It should be changed right away. We explain the four reasons why you should customize your LinkedIn URL, which will make your experience using LinkedIn (and others looking for you) much more enjoyable. What LinkedIn URL needs changingYou can tell when a person has not changed their LinkedIn URL because it looks something like thishttps//www.linkedin.com/in/your-anthroponym-7549b81/When is the last time you ever did a search for someone zugreifbar using a series of numbers? No one does it. So, it is time to change your LinkedIn URL and heres why.1. It just looks better and easier to readLinkedIn URLs that are customized specifically for your name are easier to add on resumes, email signature, or other marketing materials. It may landseem like a small detail but it shows you are pa ying attention to detail and not just creating an account, only to forget about it. Those who use LinkedIn to screen candidates can tell who pays attention to this small, yet very important detail. This looks betterhttps//www.linkedin.com/in/your-nameThan thishttps//www.linkedin.com/in/your-name-7549b812. Custom URLs make you easier to findIf a hiring manager or employer remembers your name and not your website or lost your resume, a custom URL can work in your favor. Your URL should be so simple that all a person has to do is Google your name, see the top results, maybe see your LinkedIn headline, then go to the right LinkedIn profile with your name in the URL.Note Due to commonly used names it is a good idea to have a great LinkedIn profile photo. This leads to the next reason.3. Grab it while its hot. Custom URLs are first-come-first-served.Grab your custom URL quickly before someone else does. Those named John or Jane Smith probably had their chances of getting their own customiz ed public URL disappear quickly. Unfortunately, once a person claims a URL it cannot be used by anyone unless the following happensThe owner changes it to something elseYou wait 180 days for the URL to become available againTip If you see someone has a URL you desire, message them and see if something can be worked out. This was the case when a staff member at Find My Profession discovered his URL was in use by someone with the same name. After a few friendly messages and connecting, they both worked out who would use what URL. They agreed to these URLshttps//www.linkedin.com/in/stevenlowell/ (Find My Profession staff)https//www.linkedin.com/in/stevelowell/ (Public speaker with the same name)Will people still make a mistake and find the wrong person from time to time? Yes, but both profiles are easy to find by name search. There are others with similar names, too, but they are using hyphens and maybe a bit tougher to find by typing in a URL.Note You can only change your LinkedIn pro file URL five times, every 180 days. Work out the changes before customizing the URL.4. Boosts your social media credibilityNothing says, Create it and forget it like seeing a URL that has not been changed. No one will bother to network with a person who barely uses a LinkedIn account. If you know how to change the URL on your LinkedIn profile it shows you think about the followingProfessional social media footprintThe importance of others finding youThe importance of what others think when viewing your profileMaking an effort to present your best self onlineAt the end of the day, this may seem like a small thing. But if you are in the business of hiring someone and you need to get in contact with them quickly, you will see why this is a big thing the moment you cannot find who you are looking for (or if you do find them and their URL ends in 8675309).

OPINION The price of being social

OPINION The price of being social OPINION The price of being socialPosted August 2, 2013, by Marni WilliamsIn our age of social recruiting, personal branding is more important than ever. But is social media good or bad for your job prospects? Last month we heard from Julia Watters about the positive spin on social media. Thats all well and good, but Im here to tell you that its not all Instagrammed cupcakes and rainbows. Social media may be a force for good but it does have a dark side. The first thing that needs to be said is that in todays social world, opting out isnt an option. Jobvitepolled over 1,000 recruiters and found that 93 per cent use LinkedIn to find qualified candidates. Even facebook inc and Twitter are proving to be contender hotbeds, attracting 66 per cent and 54 per cent of recruiter eyeballs respectively. Thats great for the decision-makers, but what about job seekers? How should we feel about always being on show? Any celebrity will tell you that mistakes ar e more costly when they are made in public think disgraced American politician Anthony Weiner, who had to resign from Congress in 2011 due to a sexting scandal. The difference is that celebrities, politicians and high-profile business people have PR managers to protect their personal brands. The average person, however, wouldnt have a clue of how to turn a misstep into a marvel. Professional branding is all about sending a consistent message, but with social media we no longer have control. In the realm of instant updates, checking in and tagging, and with our brands in the hands of friends, colleagues and even distant contacts, image is a fluid and fragile thing. Forbes Lisa Quast offers sound advice Dont create a mismatched brand by conveying different or competing attributes in various social media outlets posting comments on LinkedIn about your vacation when youre trying to brand yourself as a savvy cross-functional project team leader. Doing so will create audience confusi on about who you are and what you do. Does your future boss need to know that you checked into a club at 3am? Just what you think of Lindsay Lohans latest rehab stint? Which way you vote? We talk differently to our besties and our bosses, so I suggest imagining Facebook as a high school reunion, LinkedIn as a jobs market and Twitter as a soapbox and the wider the net we cast, the more we need to think about consequences. Its murky territory Australias Industrial Relations Commission is currently discussing corrections officers who recklessly criticised privatisation and lost their jobs as both victims and perpetrators. At the other end of the spectrum, even small mistakes can be menacing more than 50 per cent of recruiters will react negatively to a spelling or grammatical error in someones profile. If that many qualifikation employers are reacting to spelling, then imagine how they feel about more significant errors of judgment? Ive trawled the wreckage of social media casualt ies and one thing is certain new ways to damage your brand, and even get fired, continue to float to the surface. From weatherman Al Roker who tweeted photos of his experience as a juror, to the Virgin Atlantic crew who joked about safety standards the examples are endless. Once your posts are shared outside your network they can be a bit like lantana easy to take hold and very hard to remove. A picture of me wearing a flanno and sporting an undercut, circa 1992, serves as a cruel reminder that social media doesnt come with an expiry date. And I think we all know that data never really dies, even if we hit delete. To avoid the future ghosts of our social past, we need to picture ourselves in five, 10 and 20 years time and that isnt easy in the 90s I fancied an angry tattoo to go with that undercut. Perhaps social media forays should be considered in the same light permanent and with the potential to put people off. Its a lesson that goes beyond personal branding, too. Earlier this year Mashablereported that social media heightens envy and body issues and decreases productivity. This may sound like too much to keep a handle on, but we cant put the social genie back in the bottle. The best we can do is stay alert and fix mistakes. So make sure you know your employers social media policy, stay sensitive, act quickly and apologise sincerely if things go wrong your next job may depend on it.Marni has made it difficult to ignore some of the the pitfalls of social media, but what about the perks?
